Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory of Semiotics Analysis

 introduction to Saussure's theory

 Day 3

Hello my little Alakazam, today in class I learn about the Ferdinand De Saussure's theory. Ferdinand De Saussure was a Swiss linguist, semiotician and a philosopher. He created a theory that explains the reason that why we comprehend sign, is because of its concept the sound and pattern. With those clues we are able to decode, the message hidden behind each sign that we observe.

The purpose of this assignment is to help us students realize the importance of the sound and image choices for our movie opening. Based on the theme of the movie these factors have a major role in shaping and delivering the message to our audience. For this lesson, we created a PowerPoint of the Saussure theory the first slide introduces the title, and the second slide defines some terms while defining the Saussure theory with a picture of Saussure. Just like that, the third slide provides the audience with some examples when using the terms sign, signified, and signifier. At last, the fourth slide contains a link where the pictures used in the PowerPoint were found to put together this PowerPoint. In the group project, I participate by designing the Saussure PowerPoint slides and also completing the example slides. I think Saussure's theory is important to film because in every movie, tv the producer's choice helps the audience understand them and helps keep the movie clear and organized.

For example, in the anime Pokémon sun and moon the first episode feature the producer choice of signifier the main character on a Pokémon jet ski boat on an island, with lively, joyful music in the background. when consumes these signs, we are able to decode the signified message meant by the producer. Showing this would be an adventurous summer vacation.

Reflection

From what I learned from Saussure's theory I realize that there are lot of work that goes into creating a movie or anything that the audience consumes. To the point where we can decode someone based on their comportment. In addition to that due to my knowledge, I've started to look at things from a deeper perspective to see if there aren't any messages that I've missed. I can now detect the difference between sign, signifier, and signified in a media context. One media tool I use the most is Microsoft Office Word I won't say I am too much of an expert, but I know my way around.
